Lavender (Lavandula) is a genus of plants that belongs to the mint family (Labiatae). The most common species of lavender is lavandula which includes 25 species of lavender. Most species of lavender are indigenous to the Mediterranean and they can be found in rocky and limestone areas. Lavender can also be found over North Africa, the Mediterranean, Europe and Western India. In Greece the most common self-grown species are L. angustifolia and L. stoeshas.
